Key Stage 3
Year 7
Many members of staff volunteer to give talks about topics in Physics and Astronomy at local schools. These visits involve no cost to the schools as the University is happy to cover all travel costs of the speaker. Speakers can be contacted by completing our online request form.
EXTRA SOLAR PLANETS
Dr Christian Knigge
Years 6 and 7, Years 7 & 8, or Years 9 & 10 (14 & 15 years)
An Introduction to the search for planets around other stars. This talk covers techniques for finding planets and explores recent discoveries. More difficult concepts are provided for the older age groups covering topics suitable for GCSE level.
Year 8
Hands-on Activity 'Toys in Space'
This activity - designed by the University of Leicester's Space Centre - allows students to experience and gain knowledge of how forces differ on Toys when they are used in zero-gravity conditions. This activity is run by post-graduate astronomy students and includes an introductory astronomy talk. The activity can be performed at your school, or here at the University, please contact the Schools Outreach officer to book the activity. More about the activity can be found here.
Year 8 Summer School
The School of Physics and Astronomy runs an annual Year 8 Summer School in July of each year. The Summer School is run jointly with the School of Chemistry and is part of the Aim Higher project (which is coordinated at the University of Southampton by the Educational Development Service ) (http://www.soton.ac.uk/eds/ ). The Summer School is part of widening participation initiative aimed particularly at students who may be less familiar with higher education, perhaps because they don't know many people among friends and family who have been to university and who can advise them on what choices to make.
Departmental Visits
We are always happy to work with secondary school science teachers who would like to take a group of their students to our department. Such visits can provide students with a clearer understanding of what is involved in studying physics at the degree level and typically include a tour of our teaching and research facilities and some hands-on demonstrations. Departmental visits can be arranged via our Schools Liaison Officer. (Note that these departmental visits are separate from, and in addition to, the visit days that we run for students who have already received a formal offer to study physics at Southampton.)
