Life at Southampton

All students who place our Physics and Astronomy courses first on their UCAS choice are guaranteed an offer of a place in Halls of Residence for their first year, as long as they comply with the simple application criteria. The Halls are within walking distance of the School and other main campus facilities, and are also on the Uni-link bus routes. See the links below to explore the halls and our accommodation guarantee in more detail.

The Students' Union is the focus of student life on campus. There are cafés, a mini-market, bars and bistros. As all student rooms on campus have phones it's always easy to arrange to meet up at the Union or go out into Town.

The University itself boasts nearly 100 sports and social clubs and a new sports complex which includes a 25m swimming pool and a large sports hall and fitness suite. This means there's always the opportunity to take up a new interests or meet like-minded people. Budding journalists can get involved with the student newspaper while Student Community Action coordinates voluntary work opportunities.

Southampton is an exciting city. The City Centre is only a few minutes away from the Campus via the University's own Unilink bus service. Here you will find everything from pubs, clubs and live music to cinemas and theatre, sport and shopping, restaurants and cafes. In the past five years the city centre has benefitted from investment in shops and leisure facilities amounting to several million pounds and is now ranked in the top ten shopping destinations in the UK. Southampton also boasts a Premiership football team, bringing first class football to the heart of the city at the superb St Mary's stadium. Moving a little further afield the Solent is world famous as a centre for sailing, and the New Forest and Isle of Wight provide excellent opportunities for walking and cycling.

Southampton is only 1 hour by train from London (Waterloo), and has direct rail links with Bath, Bristol and Cardiff to the west, and Reading, Oxford and Birmingham to the north Southampton is also well served by coaches, and transport links generally are very good.

In line with the University of Southampton's diversity charter, we value inclusiveness that enables all staff and students to achieve their full potential. We are keen to provide advice, information and support for people who have an impairment, be it dyslexia or a visual impairment etc. and the University has a disability service
