The University of Southampton

Studying abroad can give you valuable experience of living and working in a different country and the development of skills in the field is a crucial component of some of our selected programmes. It also offers you a challenging and rewarding experience.

Exchange opportunities

Southampton is part of the European Union’s Erasmus programme, which  offers the opportunity to undertake a period of study or a work placement in Europe as a part of your degree programme. We have links with a number of relevant universities and can provide language preparation before you go.

Field trips

The field trip to Tenerife will allow you to develop observational and technical skills, as well as increase your confidence to place theories discussed in lectures into their appropriate context.

Read our students story and view the 2016 gallery below

This unique field trip has run for over 25 years. In the first week students work in teams to design a high energy (hard X-ray/Gamma ray) telescope mission.  You will work in conjunction with Masters students from the University of La Laguna (ULL) and University College Dublin (UCD). In 2016 we had seven teams which allowed the opportunity for two new science projects which investigated Terrestrial Gamma Ray Flashes and Planetary Gamma Rays

In the second week 12 of the brightest UoS astronomy students have access to the world-class observing facilities at on top of Mount Teide. In 2016, students got a full six nights of observing time and one night the ‘Seeing’, the atmospheric disturbances which make the stars twinkle, was at a record breaking low, meaning we were able to observe the sky with an incredible accuracy.
