The University of Southampton

Jay Janssens Master of Physics (MPhys) Physics with Astronomy, 2019

“I was really drawn to the physics department at Southampton as it was already familiar from field trips. The student ambassadors on my visit really helped me to get excited about studying at Southampton too.

The learning environment is well equipped and very professional – as well as being really comfortable and friendly.

Superb lecturers

The lecturers at Southampton are superb and really walk you through the challenging topics, but they also make the lectures fun and engaging. In my first year there were musical intermissions between double lectures and end of module jokes in my quantum lectures this year! The learning environment is well equipped and very professional – as well as being really comfortable and friendly. I joined the University’s Physics Society, Physoc, and it has been great meeting all of the other physicists and feeling part of the department.

Getting involved

There is so much you can get involved in at Southampton; I have taken part in several societies including volunteering for the student union cinema, Union Films, which has been an incredible experience. I have learned how to be part of a team and manage a cinema, but it’s also been a great chance to get involved in my student body while getting to watch great movies and make lifelong friends. I also joined the University Theatre Group and Southampton Canoe Club so life is busy and fun!

Vibrant community

I would certainly recommend the University of Southampton to prospective students. It has a really vibrant and welcoming community that gives you so many opportunities to get involved and get the best out of your time here!
