Scientists will seek to understand whether gravity has quantum characteristics

Physicists from the University of Southampton are part of an international team outlining a new test to answer one of the greatest challenges in modern physics.

Professor Hendrik Ulbricht and Dr Marko Toroš from Southampton’s Department of Physics and Astronomy will seek to understand whether gravity has quantum characteristics through an experiment announced in a new paper in Physical Review Letters.

The proposed test would observe two microscopic masses as they fall through a series of magnetic fields, potentially offering the first evidence that gravity might behave in a quantum manner.
