The University of Southampton

This unique field trip has run for over 25 years. In the first week students work in teams to design a high energy (hard X-ray/Gamma ray) telescope mission.  You will work in conjunction with Masters students from the University of La Laguna (ULL) and University College Dublin (UCD). In 2016 we had seven teams which allowed the opportunity for two new science projects which investigated Terrestrial Gamma Ray Flashes and Planetary Gamma Rays

In the second week 12 of the brightest UoS astronomy students have access to the world-class observing facilities at on top of Mount Teide. In 2016, students got a full six nights of observing time and one night the ‘Seeing’, the atmospheric disturbances which make the stars twinkle, was at a record breaking low, meaning we were able to observe the sky with an incredible accuracy.
