An inventive approach for sonifying the stars championed by a research collaboration at the University of Southampton has been presented in a public lecture at the Royal Astronomical Society.

Dr Wanda Díaz-Merced outlined the latest results from the promising technique of sonification, which turns large data sets into audible sound, creating possibilities for new astrophysical discoveries and potentially widening the diversity of engagement with astronomy.

The audience heard a sonified representation of whistler waves in the Earth’s atmosphere as Dr Díaz-Merced introduced published studies that demonstrate how sighted people’s research can be enhanced using multi-sensorial information, including sound. She then used her own voice to sonify data from a recent study on an enigmatic growing black hole.

Pre and post audience feedback revealed a positive response to the technique, with an increasing number underlining the potential for visually impaired people to make valuable contributions to scientific research. Dr Díaz-Merced developed sonification for astronomy after losing her sight as an undergraduate and is advancing the innovation through a partnership with Southampton’s School of Physics and Astronomy.

Dr Poshak Gandhi, Sonifying the Cosmos Project Lead, explains: “Astronomy is undergoing a revolution driven by the vast quantities of data available from our exploration of the cosmos, however its analysis is heavily dependent upon visual perception and thus excludes visually-impaired people. Sonification enables users to present any kind of numerical data as sound and the resulting sequences allow listeners to identify features such as transient peaks and pulses.

“The human ear is incredibly adept at picking out patterns and isolating features. Although astronomy is our testbed here, this has much wider applications for the development of multi-sensorial human-computer data interaction systems.”

The Royal Astronomical Society public lecture was held at Central London’s Burlington House, while highlighting the International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) awareness activities for widening participation in astronomy.

The Southampton project, which is supported by the University’s Public Engagement with Research (PER) programme, builds upon Dr Diaz-Merced’s research on ‘sonic intuition’. Dr Díaz-Merced has drawn international praise, including an Estrella Luike trophy, for her research and has been working for the IAU’s Office of Astronomy for Development in South Africa. She was also named as a Trailblazing Woman of Science by the BBC in 2017.

The sonification software presented was developed in collaboration with Dr Beatriz García and Johanna Casado of the Instituto de Tecnologias en Detección y Astropartículas-Mendoza, Argentina, under the support of the nation’s National Scientific and Technological Research Council, CONICET.

I am a researcher that works on development of lasers, 2D materials, Terahertz spectroscopy and photonics system for quantum physics applications.

I work in Physics and Astronomy in the University of Southampton from September 2007 where I lead the TeraHertz laboratories group and the Ultrafast lasers group. I am at the level of a tenured Associate professor and I am the head of the graduate school in Physics and Astronomy. I was at the steering committee of the TeraNet network which is a group of UK scientists that are given the task from EPSRC to strengthen TeraHertz research and form a roadmap of TeraHertz activities in the UK. I am part of the Quantum Hub on Sensors and now we are poised for the 2nd stage of the Quantum Hubs in the UK to start during 2020.

We have demonstrated a 60 fs semiconductor ultrafast laser {Nature Photonics 3, 729-731, 2009}; world’s first all semiconductor THz spectrometer {Opt Lett, 33, p. 2125, 2008}; the first THz surface emitting photonic crystal quantum cascade laser {Appl Phys Lett, 93, 171112, 2008}; a novel type of THz emitter {Appl Phys Lett, 103, 252101, 2013}; a tunable repetition rate semiconductor ultrafast laser {Appl. Phys. Lett. 113, 161106, 2018}. I was invited in 2018 SPIE Photonics West to present our work on VECSEL-based THz spectrometers. We work on 2D materials, specifically on non-volatile, re-writable optical control of graphene conductivity using photo-conductive insulators {ACS Nano. https://doi.org/10.1021/acsnano.8b02161}. Finally we work on components for THz wavefront and waveform control based on meta-materials and liquid crystals {Opt. Mater. There are striking similarities between the collective behaviour of ants and the evaporating processes of black holes.

Physicists from the University of Southampton have identified striking similarities between the collective behaviour of ants and the evaporating processes of black holes.

The findings, which have been published in the Journal of High Energy Physics, relate string and gauge theory to ant theory by comparing the bound state of the different systems.

The linked dynamics have helped scientists understand the microscopic mechanism of the black hole evaporations.

Dr Masanori Hanada, of Southampton's School of Physics and Astronomy, collaborated with co-authors from the University of Tsukuba in Japan to relay the surprising finding.

"Stephen Hawking discovered that a black hole does not only absorb the things around it, but also radiates and gradually evaporates," Masanori explains. "This has led to widespread research into the quantum aspects of gravity, including the holographic principle and gauge theory which is intensively studied here in Southampton.

"A typical example of gauge theory is Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) which transition to Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) at high temperatures. According to the holographic principle, black holes and QGP are essentially the same thing; however, we have been unable to explain the basic feature of why black holes become hotter as they evaporate, unlike usual quantum systems."

Curiously, Masanori discovered the answer when he immersed himself in British people's love of football.

"As a newcomer to the UK, I felt obliged to learn about football and bought a book called Soccermatics by British mathematician David Sumpter," he says. "Sumpter is an expert in the collective behaviour of animals, and in order to explain a certain aspect of football referred to the collective behaviour of ants. Strikingly, I could immediately see the same dynamics as string and gauge theory.

"In string theory, D-branes interact with each other via strings and form a bound state - a black hole. In the ant theory, ants interact with each other via pheromones and form a bound state - the ant trail. The natures of the interactions in these two seemingly different systems are essentially the same. In 2016, Jonathan Maltz (then at Berkeley) and I worked on this problem without knowing the ant theory, and figured out how D-branes should behave in order for the Hawking's calculation to be reproduced. The ant theory taught us why they behave that way.

"The ant theory has then taught us more. It has other kinds of phase diagrams with counterparts in gauge theory - including the actual QGP quark-gluon plasma created in colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN - and this has led us to a unified way of understanding the microscopic dynamics behind the phase transitions in various gauge theories."

Masanori joined the University of Southampton in 2018 as part of a five-year Ernest Rutherford Fellowship from the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

He is interfacing between the University's String Theory and Holography Group and Southampton High Energy Physics (SHEP) theory group, which are combined within the Southampton Theory Astrophysics and Gravity (STAG) Research Centre.

Professor of Physics and leader of the Integrated Nanophotonics group.

Otto Muskens received his PhD in 2004 at the University of Utrecht and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at CNRS in Bordeaux, Philips Research Eindhoven and the AMOLF institute in Amsterdam. Since 2009 he leads the Integrated Nanophotonics Group in Southampton, where from 2012-2017 he held a prestigious EPSRC Early Career fellowship on the development of complex photonic networks for controlling light. He is an investigator in the Southampton Centre for Photonic Metamaterials and associated Program Grant and member of the Zepler Clean Room management committee. In 2016 he held the Debye visiting chair at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. His research has received >4500 citations (full record on Google Scholar) and >£3M of PI grants from EPRSC, Horizon 2020, Royal Society, Leverhulme Trust, and Dstl. Recent activities include editor at Optics Express, organisation of the Complex Nanophotonics Science Camp, top 1% peer reviewer at Publons and top 6% reviewer at EPSRC Peer Review college.

Research interests

The Integrated Nanophotonics group aims to develop fundamental understanding and new applications of nanophotonics integrated in diverse fields ranging from silicon photonics to cell biology. Important elements of our work are plasmonic nanostructures, nanowires, and complex nanophotonic networks. The team consists of 8 PhD students and 4 Postdoctoral researchers and each year hosts a number of undergraduate research projects and summer studentships.

Dr Marcus Newton is an Associate Professor of Physics and a UKRI Future Leader Fellow. His research interests include:

  • The development and use of lens-less imaging techniques such as Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging (BCXDI) to study nanoscale quantum materials at X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facilities such as Euro-XFEL and x-ray synchrotron facilities such as the Diamond Light Source.
  • Ab-initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of emergent phenomena in multi-functional quantum materials using high-performance computing facilities.
  • Materials development for the capture of light and ambient vibrational energy such as photovoltaic devices and piezoelectric mechanical recouperation devices that can potentially enable low-cost and innovative renewable sources of energy.

Marcus has also worked closely with industry and has patents related to energy materials and devices.
