Dr Patrick Ledingham PhD

Lecturer in Quantum Light and Matter

I received my Bachelor of Science in Physics (First Class Honours) from The University of Otago in 2007. I then went on to obtain my PhD from Otago in 2011 in Dr Jevon Longdell's team, where I developed and established new quantum light-matter protocols in rare-earth-ion-doped solids. I then undertook a postdoctoral position in Barcelona at the Institut de Ciències Fotòniques (ICFO) in Prof Hugues de Riedmatten's team working on quantum memories in solids until 2014, and then joined Prof Ian Walmsley's group at Oxford to work on broadband quantum memory protocols in warm vapours until 2020. I am currently a Lecturer in Quantum Light and Matter Group in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Southampton, where I lead the Hybrid Quantum Networks Laboratory.

My research interests lie in quantum light-matter interactions between atomic ensembles (based on rare-earth-ion-doped solids and alkali vapours) and single photons (generated from quantum dots and nonlinear media). My research aims to merge these disparate systems to form large-scale quantum photonic networks for the processing of quantum information over global distances.
