Dr Tim Freegarde

Dr Tim Freegarde MInstP MRaES is a Senior Lecturer in the Quantum, Light & Matter group. He studied at New College, Oxford and received his DPhil from the university’s laser group. After a couple of years in industry, he returned to academia under Prof Ted Hänsch at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics after which, with a brief stop at the European Lab for Nonlinear Optics (LENS), he moved to Oxford’s Physical & Theoretical Chemistry Lab. Following a further two years at the University of Trento, and a short spell at Imperial College, he came to Southampton in 2003.

His research group explores the use of optical forces to manipulate atoms, particles and nanostructures. It has invented a number of schemes for the cooling and trapping of atoms and other species (time-of-arrival trapping; the metastable optical pumping trap; cavity-enhanced dipole traps; mirror-mediated cooling; amplified cooling; momentum-state algorithmic cooling) and has investigated the application of composite pulse techniques and adiabatic passage to improve the fidelity of atom interferometer operations. It is currently developing atom interferometric velocimetry as a technique for inertial sensing and rotation measurement, while exploring new techniques for the next generation of atom interferometry devices. The group’s experimental and theoretical research includes a wide range of instrument and device development from control electronics to optical and laser devices and stabilization, including a commercial collaboration on cavity-enhanced water vapour detection.

Freegarde recently led a seven-country (10 investigator) €2M collaboration on Cavity-Mediated Molecular Cooling, and currently heads the Rotation Sensing work-package of the UK Quantum Technology Hub for Sensing & Measurement. His textbook Introduction to the Physics of Waves is published by Cambridge University Press.
