Optical Fibre and Photonic Technologies MSc

Physics and Astronomy is closely connected to the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton.

The ORC is one of the world’s largest and most successful institutions for photonics research. Led by Professor Sir David Payne, its roots date to the birth of lasers and optical communications, nearly 50 years ago, and now covers areas as diverse as lasers, optical communications, nanophotonics, biophotonics, fibre optics, integrated optics and sensors.

The ORC’s MSc programmes are designed to place students at the forefront of knowledge in optoelectronics, working in a vibrant community and alongside leaders in the fields of fibre optics and photonics.

Working in our new, state-of-the-art cleanroom complex with access to our extensive range of optical laboratories, you will benefit from integrated transferable skills elements and participation in the ORC's week long Industry Showcase.

I believe the future belongs to photonics; faster, cheaper, smaller and more powerful technology. The ORC has a unique academic environment, with well-known scientists in photonics and incredible fabrication and experimentation facilities – all of which will help me to achieve my aspirations.
