Top students on our MPhys Astrophysics with a Year Abroad (Honours) have the oppportunity to work on an exciting research project overseas. Relocating to Boston, astronomy students will spend a year at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
The Center combines the resources and facilities of the Harvard College Observatory and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory to pursue studies in the basic physical processes that determine the nature and evolution of the universe.
Broad programmes of astrophysical research touch on almost all major topics in astronomy including: star and planet formation, cosmology and extreme astronomical objects.

“In terms of the work, it’s more like being a PhD student or researcher, rather than a typical university student”
“This is a once in a life time opportunity to get first-hand experience in academic study and live in a lovely city”
"I enjoyed my project hugely, and am grateful to my supervisors for their work ethic and passion”
"The project work itself, though quite demanding at times, is extremely rewarding"
“The Centre for Astrophysics has a thriving working environment with talks and seminars every day from top scientists. It really is one of the best places to do astronomy.”
