Current techniques for inspecting radiation sources rely upon devices like the handheld Radioisotope Identification Device from Symetrica

Gamma-ray imaging techniques first used in space telescopes are being applied in modern security and health systems in a joint project between the University of Southampton and industrial partner Symetrica.

The two-year partnership aims to transfer and embed coded aperture imaging systems for new gamma-camera systems that will ultimately have advanced 3D imaging capability. The technology, which overcomes the difficulties of focusing high energy radiation, will lead to applications including the remote inspection of transportation and cargo for radioactive materials as well as new scanning systems in the field of Nuclear Medicine.

The imaging techniques being explored are based on coded apertures, or coded masks, that have been largely developed for gamma-ray astronomy and deployed on working space telescopes. These overcome the issues with lenses and mirrors that become transparent to more energetic X-rays and gamma-rays by using dense materials like lead or tungsten to cast a complex shadow of the sources onto a detector plane.

The project aims to develop a new coded aperture imaging system which could inspire a new generation of ‘stand-off’ imaging systems. These systems would allow for remote inspection for radioactive materials, meaning operators wouldn’t have to get close to the subject. The imagers have a wide field that allows larger areas to be scanned at once, with the imaging system allowing any radioactivity detected to be associated with specific objects or areas. Symetrica’s world-leading isotope identification capabilities will be used to precisely identify the source material.

For the purposes of medical imaging, scientists hope the emerging technology can combine coded masks with new detectors to produce a 3D imaging capability. The new technology will not require heavy equipment and will be far less intrusive than current scanning methods where patients have to be taken to the camera. Medical scans using the new technology should be faster and involve lower risks to the patient.

Professor Tony Bird, the academic lead on the project, says, “It is exciting to see astronomy techniques being translated into new practical applications and I hope this partnership will lead to strong long-term collaboration with our high-tech local industry. We might see this technology in use in ports and airports across the world in the near future. A lot of the early studies into these techniques were pioneered by the University of Southampton so it is fitting that our scientists are continuing to lead advances in this field.â€?

Through the current collaboration, known as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), postdoctoral researcher Callum Shand from Southampton’s Department of Physics and Astronomy has been seconded to the industrial partner to drive development of the imaging innovation.

The University-industry collaboration is being joint-funded by Symetrica and Innovate UK, a Government body driving productivity and growth through innovation in business. Symetrica, originally a spinout from Southampton’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, is a global leader in radiation, detection and identification.

Dr Matthew Dallimore, CTO at Symetrica says, “The KTP is an excellent opportunity to reinforce the links between ourselves and the excellent faculty members at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Symetrica’s strategy is to push the boundaries of detection and identification of radioactive threats for Homeland Security applications. It is imperative that we remain at the cutting edge in our field; this KTP provides Symetrica with the opportunity to do just that, as well as move into the Nuclear Medicine market.â€?

Prof. Poshak Gandhi researches extreme time-domain astrophysics, with an emphasis on multiwavelength observations of black holes. His studies have established the connection between accretion and extreme obscuration in supermassive black holes at the centres of massive galaxies, as well as the causal links between accretion and outflows in relativistic astrophysical jets.

Prof. Gandhi hails from New Delhi, and has worked in Chile (ESO) and Japan (RIKEN/JAXA). He completed his thesis in X-ray astronomy from the Institute of Astronomy (Univ. of Cambridge), but has recently focused on connecting the high-energy regime with infrared and optical observations. He is a member of the NuSTAR and Hitomi science teams. Several of his projects are focused on big data time-domain mining and analysis, including LSST, NuSTAR, AstroSat, Gaia and eROSITA; he is the PI, affiliate PI, for major observational projects exploiting each of these, and offers PhD projects in all. More details about his research are on his personal homepage and he may be reached through twitter.

Sam Birtwell MPhys Physics with Photonics, 2004, PhD Physics, 2009

Research Engineer, Gill Research and Development Limited

I design innovative new sensors for markets as diverse as motorsport, industrial machinery, aerospace, marine and meteorology. Contact with a wide range of application areas keeps things interesting and allows plenty of scope for new ideas to meet the diverse challenges.

The Physics and Astronomy department was one of the very few in the country offering the optics and photonics specialism I was interested in.

Personal homepage

Hendrik is Deputy Head of School for Research and Enterprise at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Southampton until July 2022, and until August 2020 Head of the Quantum, Light & Matter (QLM) research devision at the same department.

Hendrik is Professor of Physics. He obtained his undergraduate degree in physics (Dipl.-Phys.) from the Technical University at Berlin (Germany) and the Albert Einstein Institute (Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, Golm) in 2000 with a theoretical work on Black Hole Thermodynamics. He graduated with a PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) from the Free University of Berlin and the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society (Germany) in 2003 with a work on experimental surface science in the group of Nobel Laureate Gerhard Ertl (NP in Chemistry 2007). After a postdoc position at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, US on a Max Kade fellowship and as senior postdoc and Assistant Professor at the University of Vienna (Austria), he joined the Department of Physics & Astronomy in 2008 as a Reader and was promoted a personal chair in 2014. He leads the Quantum Nanophysics and Matterwave Interferometry research group. Ulbricht is the proud holder of the certification of apprenticeship as a bricklayer.

Research

Research interests

Hendrik's main research interests concern experimental tests of fundamental theories of Nature by table-top experiments but also in space. Some tests are concerned with the large mass limit of the quantum superposition principle, which forms the basis of quantum mechanics. Other experiments are concerned with testing the interplay between quantum mechanics and gravitation in the low energy limit.

The Ulbricht group performs quantum experimental research on the preparation and analysis of massive systems in non-classical states by various techniques. They pioneer so-called levitated opto- and magneto-mechanics experiments, where light and magnetic fields are used to both trap and control nano- and micro-particles in vacuum. Please see the Ulbricht group webpages for more details.
