Dr Matt Middleton was awarded his PhD in astronomy (with a focus on the connection between AGN and black hole binaries) from the University of Durham in 2010. Since then he has been a PDRA at Durham, a Marie-Curie Fellow at the University of Amsterdam (2012-2014) and STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellow at Cambridge, and at Southampton where he now holds the position of Associate Professor.

His interests focus on the nature of accretion onto compact objects as revealed via the coupling of the time and energy domains (spectral-timing) and specifically the changes in the accretion flow when it reaches and exceeds the classical Eddington limit. He employs a combination of analytical theory and observations across multiple bands but predominantly the X-rays. He is external collaborator for e-ROSITA and head of SMARTnet – a network for performing observations of transients (including binaries, AGN, TDEs etc.) simultaneously in multiple wavebands.

Within the University he teaches PHYS1005:Introduction to Astronomy, and PHYS3010:Stellar Evolution.

Personal homepage

Stefano Moretti is a Professor at the University of Southampton and Director of the NExT Institute. He is also Visiting Staff in RAL PPD. Finally, he is a member of the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. 

After securing in PhD from the University of Torino, he was Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) at the University of Cambridge, then Senior PDRA in RAL and the University of Oxford. Subsequently, he was Fellow as well as Scientific Associate at CERN. He permanently moved to the University of Southampton on an STFC Advanced Fellowship in 2003.

Prof Moretti is the Post-Graduate (PG) Recruitment Officer for the Southampton High Energy Physics (SHEP) group.

He is member of the Senior Management Team (SMT), Teaching Committee (TC) and Recuitment Committee (RC) of the Data Intensive Science Centre in the South-East Physics network (DISCnet).

He is the Southampton PG Training Director for the Graduate school (GRADnet) of the South-East Physics network (SEPnet).

He has regularly acted as referee/panel member/(vice-)chair of grant applications to EU Framework Programmes 6 & 7, ESF, Italy-INFN, UK Royal Society, UK Leverhulme Trust, UK-CCLRC, UK-PPARC/STFC, US-NSF and US-DoE, Swedish NSF & Wallenberg, Estonian Research Council (ETF/ETAg), NWO (The Netherlands), CONICYT (Chile), GIF (Germany/Israel), SNSF (Switzerland), National Science Centre (Poland), IRIS-RPF (Cyprus), FWO (Belgium), etc.                               

Finally, Prof Moretti joined the prestigious panel membership of the UK 2021 Reference Excellent Framework (REF 2021). As a member of the Physics panel (Unit 9), he will be evaluating the submissions of all Physics & Astronomy Departments in the UK, with ranking determining the distribution of an Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), Scottish Funding Council (SFC), Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland (DfE) funding allocation in excess of 1.8bn GBP.

Research

Research interests

His research interests include: Standard Model (QCD and EW Interactions), Supersymmetry, Non-minimal Higgs Models, Higher Order Corrections and Monte Carlo Event Generators.

Prof Moretti’s scientific activity is in particle phenomenology, particularly in the area of collider physics. His contribution to particle physics is substantial as seen from more than 500 scientific papers/articles that he has published. (Please ignore the metrics provided by PlumX or else on these pages as they are completely wrong for my field of specialisation, always refer to iNSPIRE ones.)

Prof Moretti is also author of two textbooks, S. Khalil and S. Moretti, ``Supersymmetry Beyond Minimality: from Theory to Experiment" and ``SM Phenomenology'', both with CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group. 

The high standard of his works can be testified by more than 29,000 citations to his papers. Further, in recognition of his scientific achievements, Prof Moretti has been made Honorary Doctor of Philosophy by the Uppsala University in its 2018 honour list, where he is a now also Honorary Professor.

Finally, he is Chief Editor of OJM, PSIJ, JPP and JMLFS, Editor of Frontiers, JAPSI, LHEP, PI and AJMP as well as Review Editor for ROPP, EPJC and AHEP.

I'm a Principal Research Fellow at the Astronomy Group, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Southampton. I joined the Astro-family in 2013, after I was awarded the University Research Fellowship of the Royal Society. My research focuses on the different manifestations of accretion onto compact objects. However, I am also very interested in other subjects, such as the use of time-series in non-astrophysical research.

In addition to my research, I spend a significant amount of time doing Public Engagement with Research. Among the many activities I have done recently, I have organized the first Astro-Art-Black-Hole competition (#astroarteagujero), a competition where people learned about black holes research and expressed their interpretations via their art. Professor of theoretical physics.

Jonathan Flynn is in the Theoretical Particle Physics research group, with particular interest in lattice QCD supercomputer simulations for flavour physics and wider interests in flavour physics phenomenology. He came to Southampton in 1991 after a PhD at Harvard University and postdoctoral positions at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL), Chicago. He has been Head of Department (2015-2019) and was previously in charge of undergraduate teaching as Director of Programmes. He has been external examiner for theoretical physics degree programmes at the University of Edinburgh and Trinity College Dublin. He is a past chair of the CERN Computing Resources Scrutiny Group, scrutinising the computing requirements of the four main LHC experiments. He is also a past chair of STFC's GridPP Oversight Committee, monitoring the UK's contribution to the worldwide LHC computing grid (wLCG).

Research

Research interests

Lattice QCD supercomputer simulations for flavour physics and wider interests in flavour physics phenomenology. This means doing numerical simulations of the strong interactions of quarks and gluons in order to understand masses and decays of particles (eg, B-mesons, kaons, pions) seen at particle physics experiments at hadron or e+e- colliders. By detailed comparison of theoretical computations with experimental results we can test the consistency of the Standard Model of particle physics and look for small deviations pointing to new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Teaching

Undergraduate teaching for mainly core physics modules in 1st and 2nd year, covering mechanics, energy and matter, electromagnetism, waves and quanta. I have also taught advanced quantum physics for fourth year students and teach quantum field theory within the NExT PhD training school. I act as personal tutor for several undergraduates in each year of study, supervise undergraduate projects and do a variety of other roles associated with teaching. I am one of the Senior Tutors for Physics and Astrnomy and am chair of the postgraduate Special Considerations Board for the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering.
