Particles physics masterclass

The masterclass is an annual one-day event highlighting the latest developments in Particle Physics research.

The event is suited to Physics students and their teachers. You will learn about research from the experts, with it linked directly to A-level physics topics.

When: 24 March 2020, 10pm - 4pm
Where: Highfield Campus (link to map)
Next one: 24th March? / 3rd April 2020

Workshops delivered in school

Photonics halography workshop

Make holograms in your classroom in our bespoke delivered workshops.

These sessions are designed for up to 15 students to take part, each participant will make a hologram and discover the light theory behind the process.

Cloud chamber making workshop: a particle physics activity

Up to five students will make their own cloud chambers, observe particles and receive an introductory talk on particle physics by an expert.

What are cloud chambers?
Cloud chambers are detectors that make cosmic rays visible. They were used at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in the first experiments to detect particles.

The Hubble constant lab: an astronomy activity

Students will measure how fast the Universe is expanding, how old it is and the distance to some nearby galaxies.

If you are interested in booking or finding out more about any of our workshops, please complete our enquiry form below.

Host an undergraduate Physics and Astronomy student in your classroom

The Undergraduate Ambassador Scheme (UAS) gives Physics and Astronomy students the opportunity to undertake a school or college-based placement.

Placements introduce our students to the teaching profession. The opportunity helps them in developing skills towards their future careers and determine if they want to consider a teaching career.

Benefits for teachers:
Students can offer practical help in the classroom, by engaging pupils in their subject and motivating them in their studies.

The school-based placement should aim to include:

  • classroom observation
  • classroom assistance
  •  whole class teaching
  • involvement in support activities (after school clubs/ revision classes)
  • the design, implementation and evaluation of a Special Project (produced in collaboration with the teacher)
